the error is not related to your php install, it is related to the mysql.so
not begin loaded.
I observed on several systems that a simple  'extension=mysql.so' did *not*
do the job, a complete path did.  ( extension=/usr/lib/php4/mysql.so in my
case)

you can also get the same problem if you are running mysql 4.1.x and still
have a php with 3.23 support (not in your case obviously)
